History of Conservatories

Item Number : 1119

Conservatories are commonly known as glass structures added to houses.

Conservatories, whether you decide to Self Build or get a company to fully install, are great additions to any property.

Conservatories as we know them date back to the 17th Century and were additions to the houses of the rich and landed gentry to protect plants that they had brought back to the UK from their trips abroad. With their conservatories there were able to live in their garden all year round and enjoy their tropical plants!

The first conservatory as we know them today is allegedly the Oxford Botanic Garden, which was a fabulous glass structure.

The build of Crystal Palace increased the popularity of the Conservatory in the late Victorian period and into the Edwardian Era, particularly with the middle classes and conservatories were seen as must haves to entertain in with afternoon tea parties.

The development in the technology of glass making helped the popularity of the conservatory increase along with Crystal Palace.

Before the 18th Century glass was spun on a thin disc approximately 4ft across, with the outer edges being used as panes and the whirled centre either discarded or sold off cheaply to the Public House trade for use in their doors and windows.

With the industrial revolution gaining speed glass became a cheaper material and of better quality, the intricate and full glass designs that we are found of today originate from this time.

The World Wars put a halt to production and popularity of the Conservatory with all materials put forward to the war effort.

With modern developments in technology, design and materials used to make conservatories these sun rooms have increased in their popularity, with many people opting for a Self Build DIY Conservatory to give them extra space in their existing houses and all at fantastic prices!

Modern day conservatories offer a vast array of materials, design and structures, with each one letting the owner enjoy their garden in the comfort of their home. Ever popular are the Victorian, Edwardian and Georgian Styles, whether they are Self Build DIY, fully installed in UPVC, Double Glazed or a wooden structure.
